10.19.2008 RSS/Atom/Feed Compatible?

I have quickly noticed that feeds are quite annoying. What I initially thought
to be a universal archive reference is, in actuality, another web-based melange of disarray. For
example, after trying to get Google blog to work on my application-based RSS reader, I realized
that Google blog feeds aren't compatible with standard client-side RSS readers. Why!? So, I have worked out my
own web-based fix. Since all these feeds are, however, browser compatible, I simply create my own
archive where I name the feed as an html file in a directory on my website, and from within that
html file, link to the blog via iframe. It works flawlessly, and I succeed in compiling my news
feeds into one easy location, organized alphabetically with a simple java drop-down menu. And because
they're iframes, authentication is standard and unchanged from the original sites:

10.19.2008 More RSS Woes

It has recently come to my attention that Google's Reader doesn't support 3rd party
authenticated RSS feeds. As a result, my htaccess protected family feed won't work with Google.
Also, the htaccess file seems to be causing problems with Firefox as well, as the browser doesn't seem
capable of recognizing any data beyond the feed's description. Ah well, another project is at hand.
The feed does, however, work with Safari and application-based readers.

10.21.2008 Tyler, Texas

Who do I know from Tyler, Texas? You have visited my website on more than one
occasion and have tried to access the "Friends and Family" section. Did you find this site
through Facebook? I am curious. This is almost as interesting as the person from Melbourne,
Australia who found my site through daytonholocaust.org

10.23.2008 IP Update

After 1.5 years, Time Warner changed my IP address. At first I thought my server was
down, then I noticed I could still access the site via local IP. I know I'm on a DHCP lease, but I
wonder what prompted this change. Now I have to memorize a new IP for remote SSH login, and
updated DNS records, how annoying.

11.01.2008 Login

As much as I enjoy trying to incorporate Javascript into my website, some things just
never seem to work out, like the friends and family login. It looked nice, but untimately only
served to make accessing the site difficult. So, upon suggestion, I simplified the login process. I
now only use the standard Apache htaccess settings with the standard login. This way, the
restricted information that is woven into the main site as a whole will only require one login per
session.

02.28.09 AntiVirus on Mac?

I've always thought it a good idea to run an antivirus utility on my computer regardless
of the lack of viruses capable of functioning on my OS. Then I became annoyed with their detrimental
performance issues, as they randomly engage, causing sudden seizures of the system. I realized at
that point that I have run these tools for years (Norton AV, ClamX AV, and Mcaffee Virex) and have
never discovered a virus on my computer. Instead, I have consistently seen them do two things
faithfully: hog CPU usage and create large temporary files and not delete them. I no longer run an
antivirus utility and my computer has performed better than it ever has. I hate to give in to the
Apple fanboy mentality, but with basic caution antivirus tools for the Mac seem to be largely
unnecessary.

08.01.2009 Internal Server Issues

I'm currently experiencing some issues with Apache's authentication. Logins are
currently not working.

08.05.2009 Internal Server Issues Update--New Authentication

I decided to forego Apache's server authentication and chose client-side
PHP scripting instead. Eventually, I want to incorporate a java cookie system, but I need to conduct
further research first. I've integrated the login into the home page and removed any authentication-
required links from the main page. This way, it's apparent what requires a login and what doesn't.
Unfortunately, Apache's webserver seems out of commission for the time being. Also, because all
the previously saved login credentials were Unix-encrypted and I didn't think to back them up in
plain text, I no longer have access to them. Everyone will need to contact me again with the desired
username and password. Sorry.
